Several key things to be followed for optimizing images

Once your desired image is created or found, you are now ready to have it uploaded to the site.

  • Image size: Your photo is to be resized if it is not a huge file, which may drag the site’s page load time, thereby affecting your rankings directly on the search engines. Hence, before uploading them, resizing is necessary. When using PC, MSPaint can be used for resizing the image and on Mac, Photoshop or any of the online resizing tools can be used.

  • Warning with regards to using iPhone images: In case, iPhone pictures are to be uploaded to the WordPress site, then an annoying bug may appear where the image taken in portrait may appear landscape as your article is published. This bug may depend upon your WP template and iPhone used. This can be avoided by taking landscape images.

  • Title/File Name: Before uploading image to the site, a proper file name is to be provided to it. In other sites and WordPress, the file name of the image would be used automatically as its title.

  • Alt text: It is important how your image gets described in Alt section. Your images cannot be ‘seen’ by Google, however, it can be ‘read’. What you write within the alt-attribute is what Google ‘reads’. It is necessary for Alt-text to be concise, descriptive, and clear and keywords are not to be excessively used. Screen reader software also used Alt-text for describing images to those suffering from visual impairments. Moreover, when an image is hovered, the alt-text appears within the text box.

  • Caption and Description: You are likely to come across fields provided for Caption and Description in WordPress. SEO value is not necessarily added to your images, however, could prove to be useful for various reasons. For adding plenty of extra details, Description could be used, like how are the picture taken, when and other interesting elements. Underneath the image is shown the Caption on live articles. If it is to be used or left is entirely your decision. However, it can be used for commenting or describing an image.
